本课程适用于任何希望学习公开论坛式辩论(Public Forum Debate)技巧(以英文为语言载体)的学生。

招收6年级~8年级——英语水平和英语母语同龄人相当的学生

二、教师简介

Luxton女士(卢克斯顿女士)在密苏里州(Missouri)斯普林菲尔德市(Springfield)的Pipkin中学教授公共演讲和辩论、声乐/通用音乐、合唱团、音乐理论长达22年,直到她最近退休。Luxton女士不仅以旅游者的身份,还以教育家、管理者和表演者的身份,游历了近30个国家。她获得了威廉·珠宝学院(William Jewell College)的声乐教育理学学士学位,并获得了德鲁里大学(Drury University)的人文教育硕士学位,并获得了密苏里-哥伦比亚大学(University of Missouri-Columbia)的在线教育专业学位。

三、关于课程

本课程旨在:

整个辩论课程都围绕给出的论题展开,以资料收集、论点论据写作、辩论实战展开。

辩论课程一开始就会进行学生配对分组,并且会以小组为单位给出论题作业。围绕着论题,学生需要通过与他/她的辩论伙伴合作来进行大量针对特定主题的研究,并收集证据以支持选定的论点,学习编写建设性的发言、正反方辩驳论点论据等,以准备进行实践辩论。

学生们也将学习到不同的辩论策略,使他们的辩论更加有效。

学习先进的辩论策略可以为学生提供多层次的服务,从严格的学术课程到体验激烈的竞争。更重要的是小组团队合作友谊和相互帮助的对孩子成长的长期有益影响。

四、课程时间安排

本课程一共16次,一次60分钟,招收6年级~8年级——英语水平和英语母语同龄人相当的学生。亚洲开一个班,一共招生8人;

辩论需要2人一个小组,如果你有好伙伴想一起学习,欢迎邀请他们一起参加。

亚洲班课程时间安排:2021年7月5日——2021年8月26日,20:00pm 北京时间每周两次,周四和周日,每次60分钟,一共16次

This class is for any student who desires to learn the skill of debating in the style of Public Forum.

The course will meet for 60 minutes each week for 16 weeks.

Teacher Profile

Ms. Luxton taught Vocal/General Music, Choir, Music Theory, Public Speaking and Debate for 22 years at Pipkin Middle School in Springfield, Missouri until her recent retirement. Ms. Luxton has traveled to almost 30 countries not only as a tourist, but also as an educator, an administrator and a performer. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Vocal Music Education from William Jewell College, and her Masters Degree in Humanities Education from Drury University Ms. Luxton received her Specialist Degree in Online Education from University of Missouri-Columbia.

Ms. Luxton’s mentor in the field of debate is in the National Speech Hall of Fame and has had some of the top debaters in the country on his teams. Ms. Luxton’s students have gone on to join this outstanding debate team. She has also judged debaters up through the Regional Finals level, the winners of which move on to Nationals.

About the Class:

This course is designed to

  • teach students to make an intelligent and valid argument using pathos, logos, and ethos;
  • teach students proper research techniques;
  • help students understand the concept of bias;
  • help students develop good writing skills;
  • give students confidence in public speaking.

Each of these skills will help the student be more successful in every area of life.

Students will write constructive speeches, rebuttals, etc. as part of their ongoing homework in preparation for a practice debate.

Students will record audio and/or video evidence of their learning.

Learning the advanced strategies of Debate serves the student on multiple levels, from a rigorous academic curriculum to the experience of the thrill of competition. Equally important is the long-term impact of team camaraderie.

Students will continue to improve the writing of constructive speeches, rebuttals, etc. as part of their ongoing homework in preparation for a practice debate. In addition, they will learn new strategies that will make their debate more effective.

Students will record audio and/or video evidence of their learning.

FAQ: How will Ms. Luxton handle the different ages of her students?

Here is Ms. Luxton’s answer regarding students’ age:

“As long as every student is starting from the same place, it works out pretty well. Again, parents should remember this is a learning experience - not a full-on competition experience. In a real-life debate competition, the age ranges are split up so that younger children do not compete against seniors in high school. For a learning experience, it really is not a problem for competing and it can actually be a better learning experience for both of them.”
